Mzansi celebrities are starting off the year with a kind and giving spirit. Actor Meshack Mavuso; along with vocalist, Lady Du, Poet, Ntsiki Mazwai, TallArseTee, and Khanyisa Jaceni recently joined forces with the local non-profit organisation, Mokome Foundation in donating Organic Sanitary Towel towels in various schools across the country. The campaign started in 2022 and continues this year.
MOKOME FOUNDATION
The Mokome Foundation's mission is to bridge the gap of period poverty affecting up to 7 million South African girls. On 10 February 2023, the chairman of the Mokome Foundation, Dr. Vivian Mokome made an appearance alongside the chairman of the George Sebulela Foundation in the company of the newly elected mayor of The City of Johannesburg, Thapelo Amad to donate high-quality organic sanitary napkins to the young girls at Alexandra High. The pupils received organic sanitary towels in order to close the large gap of period poverty in the country which is part of the Dignity For Our Girl Child project mission.
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT
In addition to the sanitary towel distribution, the foundation launched, the newly established project called, Dignity For Our Girl Child aims to reduce period stigma and shame through education, empower the students, and lower the 30% estimation of young girls unable to attend school due to unaffordability or lack of access to sanitary napkins. "In the month of February, we plan to donate to 20 schools. We want to make history in 2023, and no girl child should miss out on school because of a lack of sanitary towels," says Dr. Vivian Mokome. "I plan to do the entire continent.'
CELEBRITY'S ENCOURAGEMENT
Poet Ntsiki Mazwai encouraged the pupils to stay in school as they have all the support that they need from the foundation in order to stay in school. Lady Du urged the learners to avoid substance abuse by all means. "Your current situation does not determine your future. Stay far away from substance abuse, do not even try them.' TikTok sensation Khanyisa Jaceni told the learners to save themselves and wait before being sexually active while Meshack Mavuso donated R10 000 in cash towards the initiative.
