Just as the Durban community were still recovering from a heist that took place in Folweni in the South of Durban in KwaZulu Natal (KZN) on Tuesday, another cash in transit robbery happened in KwaMashu in the north of Durban yesterday morning.
HOSTEL DWELLERS HELPING THEMSELVES TO LEFTOVER CASH
The residents of Malandela Road in KwaMashu were woken by a large bang on Wednesday morning when a group of thugs bombed a cash van and managed to get away with an undisclosed amount of cash. Few people who reside in KwaMashu hostel told ZiMoja that traffic came to a standstill as hostel dwellers ran to help themselves from the money that was left behind by the criminals before the police arrived. "People managed to help themselves to the dispersed cash. It was chaos," a hostel dweller said. Another resident who spoke to ZiMoja said that the crime looked like it was well organised as it seemed as if they knew how many security personnels were escorting the cash van. "They didn’t even take long, maybe they took about five minutes and then they were out of KwaMashu," the source said.
POLICE ON MANHUNT FOR THE CRIMINALS
KZN SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident and said that no one was killed. "Police in KwaZulu-Natal have launched a manhunt for an unknown number of suspects in connection with a cash-in-transit robbery which happened in KwaMashu on Wednesday morning. A cash delivery truck was travelling on Malandela Road when it was accosted by the suspects who were reportedly travelling in at least two vehicles. The suspects overpowered three security guards and allegedly robbed them of their firearms before fleeing from the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. Three security guards were injured and were treated on the scene," Netshiunda said.
In the Folweni cash-in-transit, Netshiunda confirmed the incident and that cops were investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery following a robbery on Tuesday morning. "Reports indicate that a cash delivery truck was travelling along the M35 Road when it came under heavy gun fire from suspects who were driving a white double cab bakkie. When the cash truck finally came to a standstill, the driver managed to run away. One security guard was shot and fatally wounded, one was rushed to hospital with a gunshot wound in the head. The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money," he said.
