A Gender Based Violence activist is disappointed after the family of a 91 year-old gogo from Alex withdrew charges against her daughter who was physically abusing her. The activistsaid the arrest was made on Friday and the 54-year-old woman, who is the abusive daughter, was due to appear in court yesterday.
CAUGHT BY SURPRISE
A activist said she woke up early and headed to court hoping that the gogo would be free from her abuser, however, to her surprise the suspect wasn't even in court because the matter was withdrawn. "I felt like a fool because I spent so much of my time on this case. I fear that the gogo will die in the hands of her own daughter because if she's brave enough to inflict so much pain on her own elderly mother, she's likely to do it again."
FAILED BY FAMILIES
She said she blamed families for their negligence and always trying to protect perpetrators. "This is why people end up dying, families always want to portray a united front when it's time for abusers to go behind bars. However, they fail to protect the victim against abuse and they'll want to cry when death is reported. The gogo is already old enough and fragile for her to be abused like. This is unacceptable...she should be taken to a place of safety."
DON'T CALL THE POLICE
In a short video circulating on social media, the gogo is heard describing her pain." I'm old and in pain she climbed on top of me and hit me in the face repeatedly. She also asked me not to call the police because she is pregnant and if I do they'll take her away. I'm tired," she said. However when the activist visited the gogo on Sunday to check up on her, she was not told that they planned to drop the charges. "They acted normal and allowed me time with the gogo, I had no clue about what they had planned. You try to help but in the end it looks like you're trying to divide a family. It's a sad reality of our black families who always try to conceal abuse." The activist said initially the gogo didn't want the case to be opened saying that the perpetrator is her child.
