The Border Management Authority says it has foiled another attempt to smuggle 20 undocumented children into South Africa, this time through the Beitbridge border post. This follows another failed attempt to smuggle 14 undocumented children from Mozambique through the Lebombo border post on Friday.
ANOTHER FAILED ATTEMPT
BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi said 20 children were rescued from the Beitbridge border. "The children were being transported from Mozambique to South Africa when the border authorities stopped them," she said. She added that this was an indication that their officials were hard at work and that no criminality would happen under their watch. "These trafficking attempts are taking place when we are well within commemorating 16 Days of No Violence against Women and Children. We have strengthened our authority and we will not back down. All those that are trying their luck will find us ready."
TRUCK DRIVERS STRANDED
Meanwhile, truck drivers are said to be stranded at the Lebombo border post after operations were suspended due to protests in Mozambique. Truck drivers said they are falling victim to criminals. They claim that in instances where these criminals steal items from them, they are made to pay for it by their companies. "We are drivers during the day and security guards during the night. Criminals have turned us into targets, taking whatever it is that we are meant to deliver, and if that happens, our companies force us to pay for the stolen goods. So now we have to look out for each other as truck drivers."
