The African National Congress has appointed a new chief spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu. Bhengu is taking over from Pule Mabe who served as ANC spokesperson from 2017 until Friday.
BHENGU'S BACKGROUND
Bhengu was the first chairperson of the Umsobomvu Youth Fund some years ago before it was renamed the National Youth Development Agency in 2009. Bhengu, is also a former Youth League leader and board member of the ANC's OR Tambo School of Leadership, as a spokesperson. She was elected to the new ANC National Executive Committee at the ANC's National Conference in December 2022. This appointment comes just as the ANC met to elect new members of the National Working Committee (NWC), which runs the ANC on a day-to-day basis in Esselenpark, Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg.
APPOINTED TO EASE PRESSURE
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said their communications team had a massive workload therefore, they have decided to have more than one spokesperson adding Bhengu as one of them. Thisas they are preparing for the 2024 elections. "We are going to have a team of spokespersons who we will introduce to you when we are finished with theLekgotla. But once the NEC has finished and endorsed our proposals they will resume their duties with immediate effect," said Mbalula.
