An e-hailing driver almost lost his life when a mob in Soweto attacked him because of voice notes that were circulating accusing him of kidnapping a baby. The incident happened in Jabulani Mall, Soweto after a woman circulated voice notes and asked people to help her because the driver took her baby. SAPS spokesman Captain Sifiso Mabizela said the woman was at Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital ,which is just across Jabulani Mall, when she spread the rumours. She claimed the driver took her baby and then drove into the mall. But it later emerged that the woman was lying.
SHE HAD A MISCARRIAGE
Mabizela said the information then circulated, when the Uber driver was about to leave the mall with a client he had just picked up, he was then attacked by an angry mob. According to Mabizela, the lady allegedly lied about her child being kidnapped. Mabizela said the information at their disposal suggests that the lady had a miscarriage and opted to lie about it. “There is currently no case of kidnapping opened at Jabulani SAPS. We appeal to members of the public to refrain from circulating false information about the kidnapping of children as this creates unnecessary panic and trauma to others. Whilst the adult male has not opened a case and probably receiving medical attention, the video will be used to arrest the perpetrators depicted in it,” he said.
MISLEADING PEOPLE
Jabulani SAPS Visible Policing Colonel Karmesh Singh is appealing to members of the public to assist with information about the alleged adult female who misled people who ended up assaulting and nearly killing the driver to contact the police
