A man who is accused of raping women in Benoni and Tembisa in Ekurhuleni, is now facing additional charges of rape. The former security guard has been linked to more than 130 rape cases which were reported in Benoni, Daveyton and Tembisa. The 38-year-old part time law student was arrested in January this year in Daveyton. He appeared before the Daveyton Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where he was due to apply for bail.
MORE CHARGES
In January, when the accused was arrested, he was only facing six charges but was soon linked to more than 35 other rapes. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the accused is facing 44 counts of rape, 43 counts of kidnapping, 41 counts of pointing a firearm as well as 17 other additional charges of fraud, obstruction of justice and forcing someone to witness a sexual act. "It is alleged that the accused raped a total of 36 women in and around Benoni, Tembisa and Daveyton, from 2018 until January 2023 when he was arrested. The youngest victim was a 14-year-old girl, while his oldest was a 33-year-old woman," said Mahanjana.
TARGET
It is alleged that he targeted his victims while going home, to work, or waiting for a taxi and offered them a lift. While inside the car, the man who has not been named as he has not pleaded would point them with a firearm and drive to a destination where he would order them to undress and rape them. Some of the victims were raped more than once. The matter was postponed to 10 May 2023, for a formal bail application.
