The marriage between the African National Congress ( ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) prevailed once again as a new mayor of Johannesburg was voted from the minority Al Jama-ah.
NEW MAYOR
Kabelo Gwamanda was elected as Johannesburg Mayor after a special council meeting that was held on Friday. The city had been without a mayor for almost two weeks after another Al Jama-ah councillor, Thapelo Amad resigned. Gwamanda came tops with 139 votes followed by former mayor and Democratic Alliance member Mpho Phalatse who received 68 votes, and Action SA councillor Funzi Ngobeni who got 59 votes.
MINORITY PARTY
Al Jama-ah is a minority Muslim political party with only three seats in the 270-seat council. Giving his maiden speech after being sworn in, Gwamanda quoted Luke 22 vs 42, Gwamanda, he said his election was God's will. " I was born and bred in the dusty streets of Soweto, proof that with every generation, there is a revolution. Let us collaborate in making sure we bring back the heartbeat of Johannesburg city," He also said a change in leadership should not lead to service delivery being affected. Gwamanda also announced the same mayoral committee elected when Amad was elected mayor in January. ANC Gauteng chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi said they were replacing a mayor that resigned and that they were not restarting the coalition. 'Al-Jama-Ah produced a mayor and the mayor resigned, the person to replace comes from Al-Jama-ah,' Lesufi said. He will be inaugurated next week.
