A heroes' welcome for AKA

AKA's funeral was fit for royalty

AKA has taken a position at his final resting place at Heroes Acre, West Park Cemetary alongside other prominent South Africans such as kwaito veteran Mandoza, broadcaster Vuyo Mbuli, ProKid, Johnny Clegg, Richard Maponya, Simba Mhere, Ahmed Kathrada and a few metres away from that of TKZee band member Tokollo "Magesh' Tshabalala.

A TALL DEAR TREE HAS FALLEN

A convoy of black BMW X5s left his home in Bryanston for St Stephen's Anglican Church in Sunninghill, Johannesburg, where his funeral took place yesterday. Family and friends said their final goodbyes in hymns and prayer before Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa spoke on the rapper's contribution to the arts. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula described AKA as a tall dear tree. "He was our proud and tall cedar tree that held high our aspirations, dreams, and hopes.'

THE COFFIN DROPS

His black and gold casket fit for royalty was ferried in a cart followed by black BMWs, guarded by traffic officers flashing their hazards taking the Supa Mega to his final resting place. The Forbes family was accompanied by AKA's close friends including Thabo "JR' Bogopa, Yanga Chief Ntshakaza, Khuli Chana, Bheki Ngcobo and Nhlanhla "Nivo' Ndimande, Raphael Benza and Somizi Mhlongo. It was a warm, but drizzly morning at Westpark Cemetery as family and AKA's daugter, poured red soil on the casket and wept while watching the casket drop. His tombstone was erected immediately with an image of the rapper and his name written in bold. According to a family friend, rights to AKA's funeral were sold to a production company and will be broadcast exclusively at a later stage. AKA and Tebello "Tibz' Motsoane were gunned down outside a restaurant on Florida Road, Durban on 10 February 10 while he was on his birthday tour and Tibz was attending a friend's birthday celebration.
