DOCUMENTING HISTORY
Lance's label has produced multi-platinum-selling artists who some ended up being on the wrong side of the law. Still recording new artists, Lance feels that this book can help upcoming artists not fall into the same trap as certain artists. The title of the book is inspired by his long-term "rival" Bonginkosi "Zola 7" Dlamini, who named one of his late dogs after the man that discovered his talent. "That is essentially where the title comes from," he tells ZiMoja. "People had a glimpse of who I am on the podcast interview I did. But this is where the detail will be," he says.
Here is an extract from his upcoming book:
THE HONEY TRAP (A chapter from A Dog Called Lance)
One harrowing experience began when I was having breakfast on a Saturday morning in Rosebank. It was 8AM and I received a call from Malik, an artist we had been recording. I could hear screams in the background. "Lance, come quick. He is gonna drown her!" I left the breakfast immediately and luckily Rosebank is a five-minute drive from the studio in Parkview.
On arrival, I was shocked at the bizarre scene I encountered. There was a nude girl in the freezing cold pool, it was June. Bongani had some sort of paddle and was keeping the terrified girl in the middle of the pool. He kept on screaming: "Tell us where it is. Tell us where it is." When he saw me he yelled: "Lance, this girl has taken our laptop."
I try to calm the situation down and got the girl out of the pool and found some clothing for her. Two other artists; Cook 299 and Ruff X were in the house looking shattered. I looked at them in anger: "What the fuck guys!" Bongz kept on shouting: "I need to get my laptop back!"
When the girl finally emerged fully clothed and very freaked out, I sat her down and gently asked her name. "My name is Honey." Honey who? "Honey Mandela." Honey Mandela? This can't be true. Ruff X found her ID and showed it to me. It was true. "Okay, Honey, so please tell me what is going on here?" She meekly told me that she had been visiting the guys in the studio for a few nights and had been doing loads of cocaine with them. Eventually, the money ran out for the party peeps. So, Honey decided to take Bongani's laptop to the dealer to get more cocaine. Shit, all of Jozi's music files were on the laptop. How were we going to find the laptop?..."
