A 27-year-old man appeared briefly at the Zaaiplaas Periodical Court following his arrest for the alleged rape of a 101-year-old elderly woman from the Zaaiplaas new stands in Limpopo.
NO SHAME
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the incident happened on the 27th of July around 5 am and police were notified. Ledwaba said the suspect was identified and arrested at his home shortly after the incident. "Reports indicate that the 101-year-old victim was asleep when she was awakened by the suspect who tried to strangle her before he raped her.The suspect, who broke the window to gain entry, fled the scene after the incident," said Ledwaba. The suspect was charged with housebreaking and rape. He was remanded in custody until 8 August 2024, for a possible bail application.
DESPICABLE
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has strongly condemned the incident. "This despicable act of violence against a vulnerable member of our community is met with the full force of our commitment to justice.The rape of an elderly woman is not just a crime against an individual but a deeply disturbing assault on our society’s values and sense of safety," concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe.
