Zulu King Misuzulu KaZwelithini has cancelled his traditional wedding to his fiancée, Nomzamo Myeni, which was set to occur this upcoming weekend. The decision was communicated through a letter signed by the king and addressed to Nonhlanhla Mkhize, the director general in the KwaZulu Natal premier's office.
WEDDING CALLED OFF
In a letter addressed to Mkhize, the King instructed for the immediate withdrawal of all benefits and security details previously assigned to Myeni. "Due to reasons beyond the control of the Royal House, the traditional wedding ceremonies involving Ms. Myeni have been called off. As a result, it has become necessary to terminate all associated arrangements," the King said in the letter. He also asked that Myeni's benefits and allowance be ceased with immediate effect. "The security detail assigned to Ms. Myeni is to be withdrawn by no later than 11:00 am on 19 January 2025. I trust that your office will facilitate the implementation of these directives promptly and ensure that all necessary measures are taken to finalise this matter. Please confirm in writing once these actions have been completed," the King said. Misuzulu paid lobola for Myeni in May last year. His first wife, Queen Ntokozo KaMayisela, who has since vacated the royal family, said in a statement last year that she only learned of her husband's marriage through social media. Misuzulu married KaMayisela in 2021 before he was crowned.
LEGAL DISPUTE
Earlier this month, the King's first wife, Queen Ntokozo KaMayisela applied for an urgent court interdict to stop the wedding after her request for a family meeting seeking mediation on their divorce was pushed to a date in February, which would have been after the wedding. In a letter through her foundation, Kamaskolo Foundation, she said she has no issue with Misuzulu getting married but that he must first change their wedding contract. She asked for her marriage to be converted from civil to customary law through a mutually agreed application. In her application, KaMayisela confirmed that she had been served with divorce papers. "I confirm that my husband has approached another woman and proposed marriage, which the said woman has accepted. I further confirm that my husband has begun making arrangements to marry the said woman and has even set a date for the said wedding ceremony and marriage. I humbly submit that the respondent herein cannot enter into (a) a civil marriage and (b) a customary marriage whilst our civil marriage still subsists," she said in the application. The urgent court application to stop the King's marriage to Myeni would have heard by the Pietermaritzburg High Court tomorrow morning.
