Zandie Khumalo finally takes the stand and takes a jab at the accused in Senzo Meyiwa trial

Zandie Khumalo gave testimony as a state witness in Senzo Meyiwa trial today

After a two-day delay, Kelly Khumalo's younger sister, Zandie Khumalo-Gumede took to the witness stand today to give testimony on what happened on the night the late soccer star was killed. Zandi was due to testify on Monday, however, she filed an application t barring the media from broadcasting her testimony live on TV saying she fears being ridiculed. Judge Tshifiwa Maumela has since ruled against the application but said only audio testimony should be broadcasted and not her photos.

SENZO'S LAST HOURS

Zandie started to give her testimony shortly after a lunch break. She gave her version of events of what transpired the night the Bafana Bafana goalie was murdered in her home in Vosloorus. Zandi said she met Senzo through her sister Kelly. She said Kelly and Senzo started dating between 2012 or 2013. "I hadn't been to his place but I heard he lived in Buccleuch. When we met, it would be at restaurants and at the clubs," Zandie told the court. She said on the day of the murder, they were in Mulbarton on 26 October 2014. "Mthoko (Mthokozisi Thwala) had slept over. Senzo was there, and so were Kelly and I. In the morning, Senzo and Kelly discussed that they were going to attend a party of an Orlando Pirates player, Kelly and I had a show that day, we were working together," Zandie told the court. She added that they left Mulbarton and traveled in the same car to drop off Senzo at the party. She said they all decided to go to the show with Senzo when they realised that the party had not started.

HE WAS CONSIDERATE

She said as they left the show, Senzo was on the phone finding out how far the preparations were for the party but they weren't done yet and he asked that they go past a house in Soweto, he explained that the Pirates player's mom stayed there and he wanted to leave money for her. She said after dropping the money at the player's house, they went to Katlehong to Mthokozisi's home, and then Senzo was on the phone with Tumelo Madlala who they were also going to pick up. "We then picked Tumelo went home because the party had not started and Kelly called our mom since we know she always cooks on Sundays. We wanted to have lunch there. She said when they got home, they realised that they needed drinks and then drove to a nearby tavern to buy. "After buying the drinks we arrived at my mom's house around 4 to 5 pm. My mom then welcomed us and dished up. Zandie said they were watching English football while drinking alcohol when her then-boyfriend Longwe Twala called to ask if he could come over and she said yes.

SENZO AND LONGWE WERE GOOD FRIENDS

She said Longwe arrived moments later and Senzo went to greet him in the car, a red Polo Vivo he was driving at the time. Her mother Ntombi, Senzo's friends Tumelo Madlala and Mthokozisi Thwala remained in the house. "Senzo and Longwe were good friends," she said. She said her mother made soup for everyone and also dishes for Longwe. After everyone had eaten, Kelly, who was outside with Senzo, came in and told their mom that the soccer star would like to go. "My mom told Senzo that traditionally, one doesn't leave the house in that manner. So we all went back inside and we sat down. Kelly remained standing and she told a joke that I can't remember."

LASHING OUT AT ACCUSED

She said while Kelly was talking, two men came into the house. Zandie started crying in court, lashing out at accused number two."Are you guys aware of what you did to our lives? The damage you have caused". Lawyer for accused 1 and 2 objected to this statement. Advocate Baloyi warned Zandie and said:" You are in the process of identifying the people that entered the home, don't address them. You pointed to someone." Zandie pointed to the 2nd accused. Bongani Ntanzi said Ntanzi was behind the first intruder. "The one who was in front with the dreadlocks was carrying a firearm and the second intruder was standing in the middle of the kitchen before the passage," Zandie said while they were seated, she could see the door opening but couldn't see who was coming in, so she leaned to try and see who was coming in. "The one with dreadlocks in front holding a firearm, he told us to take out money and cellphones. The first intruder spoke in isiZulu. He demanded that we take out money and cellphones. While we were still in shock, uncertain of whether what was happening was real, I heard a click of a firearm. Longwe stood up and pushed the one with dreadlocks with the gun, pushing him backward. Kelly ran into the bedroom opposite the kitchen which is my bedroom at home." She said they all got up and pushed both the intruders towards the kitchen. "I can't remember the order exactly, everyone was on their feet. While we were in the kitchen, we fought with them trying to get them out, but the kitchen door opened inwardly. Now while the door is closed they are facing us and their backs are against the wall, I'm referring to the one with dreadlocks and accused number two," while the fighting was happening, behind the door was Senzo and the first intruder (with dreadlocks) wrestling for the firearm. the firearm went off and the gun hit the ground and a spark from it hit me. Senzo was wrestling the 1st intruder for the firearm. Kelly then also came in to assist. She came in and went to where Senzo was to assist him with suspect number one. My mom was opposite the sink attacking accused number two using her hands," She said when the firearm went off she ran, Tumelo also heard it and ran into one of the bedrooms, followed by Zandie. Zandie will continue testifying tomorrow.
