Police in Limpopo are investigating an inquest after the death of a suspected illegal miner in Atok Bogalatadi village, under the Sekhukhune District on Tuesday. It's alleged that the 39-year-old zama zama was mining chrome when the rock fell on him, killing him instantly.
SAPS spokesperson colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the police were called to the scene after the rock fell on top of the man. "On arrival with emergency services, the police found the male victim severely injured. He was certified dead at the scene by EMS, "he said. Ledwaba added: "The deceased was identified as a 39-year-old male, originally from Mozambique," This is not the first-time an illegal miner dies after a rock fall in the area. In 2020, two zama zamas, Wilson Chauke (34) from Atok Mohlahlaneng and Victor Moagi (51) from Moroke Village died when a huge rock fell on them.
Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe urged communities to refrain from participating in illegal mining activities. "By conducting illegal mining activities, they are not only committing serious crime, but putting their lives in danger as well," Hadebe said. In August, 13 illegal miners at Kleinzee, in the Northern Cape, died underground when a mine collapsed. In recent months, the police have had their hands tied trying to fight the scourge of zama zamas and their wars. A recent incident happened in September where 10 people died in what was believed to be turf wars between zama zamas in Daveyton and Springs, Ekurhuleni.
