The woman who allegedly started the deadly fire that claimed two lives at a Joburg building yesterday morning will appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court this morning. Four people, who survived the deadly blaze with injuries, are receiving treatment in hospital while two died on the scene.
Spokesperson for the City of Joburg Emergency Services, Nana Radebe-Kgiba, said the deceased were found on the first floor of the building while the injured jumped from the balcony. Joburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda confirmed yesterday while visiting the scene that the woman who was arrested was caught on CCTV camera pouring paraffin before setting the two-storey building on fire. The building is reportedly a hijacked one. The woman is facing two charges of murder, attempted murder and arson. Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, said "A 30-year-old woman was arrested and expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court on Monday on charges of murder,"
More than 150 people, who were staying in shacks inside the building, were left homeless. Gwamanda said the city was currently working on relocating the people to a temporary emergency accommodation. "Relocating them to temporary accommodation will have to be done in collaboration with the national government. They will have to assist us financially in terms of the facilities that we need to allocate," Gwamanda said. The mayor will visit the scene again this morning.
