Former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Pitso Mosimane has opened doors for local coaches to explore their talents in the African continent. The latest coach to leave South African shores is Willy Moloto, former Polokwane City coach, who has joined the Ghanaian Real Academicals as their head coach.
Moloto said his goodbyes to family and friends on Friday before heading to the West African country to join his new team but he was officially unveiled as their new coach on Saturday. When he arrived at the airport in Ghana, the team wrote on their Facebook page: "You are highly welcome to the family (Real Academicals)."
Apart from Mosimane, other coaches who have plied their trade in the African continent include Morena Ramoreboli who coaches a Botswana Premier League team and Thabo Senong who was the manager of a team in Tanzania until last week. Last week ZiMoja reported about Senong being stuck at the Tanzanian hotel after Premier League side Singida Fountain Gate FC sacked him and his technical team. Senong joined the club in September 2023 when he was recruited by former coach, German-born tactician Ernst Middendorp. But Middendorp also quit the team, to join the Premier Soccer League outfit, Cape Town Spurs in SA.
Moloto may not be one of the colourful and popular coaches to come out of the country, but he has worked with respected coaches like Boebie Solomons, Bernard Molekwa, Jozef Vukusic, Clinton Larsen, Kwanele Kopo, former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Innocent Mayoyo, Johnny Ferreira and MacDonald Makhubedu. He is quoted on FARPost saying: "Real Academicals is a well-run team in Ghana.I am also thankful to the chairman and the board of directors for having faith in me. It's not easy to hire someone from another country. But I must also give thanks to the chairman of Polokwane City, Mr Johnny Mogaladi, and the chairman of Pretoria Callies, Mr Moses Malada." Before his move to Ghana, Moloto was assistant coach of Kopo at Pretoria Allies. He was also the co-coach at Polokwane City with Mayoyo. Moloto was promoted to the technical team of the senior side after coaching the DStv Diski Challenge team.
