College shocked to discover student is a killer

Bafana Mahungela is accused of raping and murdering Delta High school English teacher

The Sandton Campus of Varsity College Sandton said they are still in disbelief that one of their students Bafana Mahungela (21) is accused of the rape and murder of Kirsten Kluyts, an English teacher at Delta High School. Kluyts's lifeless body was discovered by a jogger on a path in George Lea Park, Sandton on the the 29th of October. It is alleged that the deceased was participating in a running event when she met her death. The accused made his first appearance at the Alexandra Magistrates' Court yesterday following his arrest on Sunday.


CAUGHT OFF GUARD


Gauteng police spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the alleged killer was arrested on Sunday afternoon, at his student residence in Parkmore. She said the deceased was allegedly raped and then strangled to death and the police, via CCTV footage, were able to identify him. "The provincial commissioner of police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has commended Sandton's team of detectives that managed to crack the murder case of Ms Kirsten Kluyts by arresting her alleged murderer on Sunday, November 26, in the Parkmore suburb," said Muridili. "This follows a thorough investigation by detectives and the cooperation of 24/7 Security management." The matter will return to court on December 5 for legal representation. NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjononwane says the state will be opposing bail.


?THE STUDENT TO BE SUSPENDED


Speaking on behalf of Varsity College, Kimberly McIntyre said the institution is sad to learn of school teacher Kluyts' murder and confirmed that Mahungela is one of their students. "Our thoughts are with her family. We can confirm that the student will be suspended, pending the outcome of a trial, as it is our policy. The matter is now in the hands of the South African Police Service (SAPS)," McIntyre said.
