Actress and Ukhozi FM radio presenter Zimiphi "Zimdollar" Biyela might soon found herself in hot water for the comments she made on radio about the South African Police Services (SAPS) on Thursday. Zimdollar, as she is affectionately known, accused the police of getting an order to shoot and kill businessman Nkululeko Mkhize, who was linked to the killing of five men at a parking lot at a shopping centre in Richards Bay last week Monday.
Mkhize was (30) was killed in a shoot-out with the police at Zimbali Estate, Ballito on Wednesday. Zimdollar who hosts a midday show with King Sifiso accused the police of being trigger happy. She made the comments following the death of Mkhize who is known to be very close to one of her brothers and taxi boss Vika Biyela. Live on air, Zimdollar said: "The thing is, the police always have a reason on why they shoot and kill suspects. If they shoot people, they come back and claim that they were being shot at. Why are they (the police) being shot at all the time? Every now and then they are shot at. People come to your house and then they claim that they were shot at while people were sleeping," she said. "We are not children. We see that there is an order issued for cops to kill people. Innocent people end up dying,"
She further said that she was sad because five of her brothers were shot and killed by the police. "They shot and killed all of them. The police but no one has ever investigated the police claims. This thing of allowing cops to just be trigger happy and shoot people must end, it's enough now," she said. Zimdollar further said that the police's National Intervention Unit (NIU) was feared. "I am just asking the South African community that we must fight this tendency of killing innocent children who are said to be dangerous," she said. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Lt-Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed that they have filed a complaint with the SABC about Zimdollar statements. On Friday afternoon, Gwala criticised Zimdollar's comments targeting the police "for doing their job". She said it is not true that there is an order issued for police to shoot to kill people. "Ukhozi FM is a big radio station, with many listeners so it is embarrassing for them to criticise us as the police," she said. SABC could not be reached for comment.
