DJ Sgqemeza's name was synonymous with nightlife, but those days are over. The Ukhozi FM breakfast show co-host is now a born-again Christian and he is proud of it.
BORN-AGAIN CHRISTIAN
Speaking to ZiMoja, the former party boy says he no longer drinks, and does not play in nightclubs and other social spaces. "I have accepted Christ as my Lord and savior, and I am proud to tell the world," Although Sqemeza, who was born Phumlani Mbatha has been a churchgoer for the past 15 years, he recently decided to drop all the things of this world and follow Christ. He says at first it was difficult to come out to his friends and declare his love for Christ but eventually he did not care who thought what about him. Sgqemeza says the hard part was turning down club gigs as a DJ. He says it got to a point where he was no longer interested in attending industry events and "After making excuses and turning gigs down, promoters eventually picked it up and realised that I am no longer interested in playing at clubs," he adds.
LOSING FRIENDS
Sgqemeza says since becoming born again, he has lost some friends while those who support his journey are still around. He also reveals that he is now a married man to a God-fearing woman. "A lot has happened since I have fully committed myself to God, my wife is very supportive of my journey, in fact, we are both on the same journeys, we pray together and we meditate in the word," Sgqemeza says there are many ways to serve the Lord, priesthood is not in his plans for now.
