After waiting on court benches for a few hours, comedian and actor Tumi Stopnonsons, real name Tumelo Matila, appeared briefly at the Randburg Magistrate's Court today on charges of assault.

THE ARREST

Tumi was arrested and charged at the Honeydew police station in August 2023 on two counts of assault and pointing an object resembling a firearm at his girlfriend Thando Ngemane, and her friend Tsholofelo Kgosimotho following an alleged verbal altercation. He spent three nights in custody after his arrest and was granted R2 000 bail.

PREVIOUS APPEARANCES

The court had revealed previously in the first appearance that Tumi threatened to kill both his girlfriend and friend during the altercation and pointed an object resembling a firearm. During his first court appearance, Tsholofelo opposed Tumi receiving bail and Thando, his girlfriend, did not. However, it was granted on the second appearance, the two complainants were absent from court. Tumi was served with a protection order, which the girlfriend's friend applied for.

POSTPONED

Today, both complainants were again absent from court. Magistrate Louise Etchell said the matter has been postponed to 8 May after mediation with the prosecution and the comedian must be on time and still honor his bail conditions. Tumi refused to comment when asked for comment.
