Tributes continue to pour in for late boxing titan Dingaan Thobela

Dingaan Thobela has passed away at 57 years old

South Africa and the world of boxing are mourning the death of former boxing champion Dingaan Thobela, fondly known as the "Rose of Soweto," who passed away yesterday at the age of 57. Dingaan, was reportedly discovered deceased in his apartment in Mayfair, Johannesburg. 

 

MAKING HISTORY


The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa, expressed his heartfelt sadness at the passing of the boxing legend who fought in some of the most memorable bouts. "As we celebrate 30 years of South African democracy, we mourn the loss of an athlete who did so much to elevate South African sport through his success in boxing. We also celebrate a champion boxer who inspired the nation, future boxers and champions from Soweto, Mdantsane, Thohoyandou and other parts of the country," the minister said. "I express my deepest sympathies to the Thobela family and the South African boxing fraternity. I join millions in mourning the passing of the Rose of Soweto," said Minister Kodwa.


TRIBUTES


Many have come forward to express their grief and share words of condolences with Dingaan's family and close friends. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) also paid tribute to the boxer. "A titan in the boxing world. We are deeply saddened by the loss of this legend. Rest in Revolutionary peace Rose of Soweto." A social media user Sherwin Peters said: "For us 90s kids - he was our national hero. I remember getting up at weird times to watch his champion fights with my dad. The PAC also sent their condolences to Dingaan's family. "We are deeply saddened by the passing of South African boxing legend. We send our deepest condolences to the Thobela family, his friends, and the boxing and sports fraternity at large. His is a loss that will be deeply felt. May his soul rest in eternal peace."
