Tributes pour in for late Carte Blanche host Derek Watts

He recently stepped down from his position as Carte Blanche host after 35 years to take care of his health. Veteran TV presenter, Derek Watts started his job as host of the show in 1988. After a long battle with cancer, he passed away.

 

CONFIRMING HIS PASSING 

 

Multichoice CEO, Nomsa Philiso confirms the passing of the radio veteran saying his contribution will forever be cherished. "MultiChoice extends its heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and loved ones of the late, Derek Watts," she says. "We remember him as a dedicated investigative journalist and a longstanding presenter of Carte Blanche. His unwavering commitment to his work and his determination in the face of challenges was truly remarkable. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. May they find solace in the cherished memories they shared and may Derek's legacy continue to inspire us all." The Carte Blanche team has also confirmed the sad news saying, "He passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning surrounded by loved ones. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife and children in this time of loss. He will forever hold a special place in the hearts and minds of his Carte Blanche family."

 

A LONG BATTLE WITH CANCER

 

The Johannesburg-born investigative journalist and host was diagnosed with skin cancer that spread to his lungs. Earlier this year, Derek was hospitalised with severe sepsis. He had hoped to recover and updated his supporters on the progress he was making. "Another short hospital stay, but I'll be fine, I'll be out of here soon. I really just wanted to say to our viewers. Thank you for all the love, the messages, the prayers that give us hope, and thanks of course, for continuing to watch Carte Blanche. I'll be back soon but have a magic week, and cheers for now," he said.

 

TRIBUTES 

 

Tributes from close friends, colleagues, and supporters have come pouring in, remembering his hard work and dedication. 

Xoli Mngambi, Newzroom Afrika anchor, says, "Very sad news about the passing of a gentle giant in the media space. I had huge respect for his work. My heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues at Carte Blanche. Your loss is our collective loss." Premier of Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi says in a message of condolence, "To Derek Watts' family and friends, Carte Balance, M-Net, and the entire media sector, kindly accept our sincerest condolences. Derek Watts is a true gentle giant. On behalf of the Gauteng Government be assured of our support and prayers during these trying times."
