Late actor Mpho Sebeng's name removed from an award nomination

The late former Ring of Lies actor Mpho Sebeng

Late actor Mpho Sebeng's name has been removed from the KwaZulu Natal Tourism Film and Television Awards. Sebeng passed away in a car accident last month while on his way from Rustenburg in the North West to Johannesburg.

The Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards judging panel said in a statement that they had made a "mistake" by nominating Mpho when he is not from KZN. "The judging panel or auditor regrets to announce that there was an oversight in the category of Best Actor for Film or Television. It has been brought to our attention that one of the nominees, Mpho Sebeng was not a resident in KwaZulu-Natal," The statement said that it is for this reason that his name has been removed from the top four nominees. "While this oversight is regrettable, there is no material difference to the list of nominees in this category as there were already four actors nominated. There will now be only three nominees," he said.

The Simon "Mabhunu' Sabela film and television awards, as stated on the awards' website, are an initiative of the KZN Department of Economic Development Tourism to acknowledge exceptional accomplishments in the South African Film and Television sector, particularly in the province. "Among those who will be honoured at the awards are actors, producers, directors and various film and television technicians," the website said. Mpho was born in Soweto and first appeared on TV at the age of 12 on shows like Justice for All and Zero Tolerance. He also acted in drama series and movies such as Bay of Plenty, Khandakulu, Scandal, The film" Winnie, Ring of Lies, and recently, Savage Beauty and BritBox. In 2017, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA). In 2018 he was nominated for the South African Film and Television Awards for Best Male Actor in a telenovela.
