The family of a young man who drowned at the Durban south beach in KwaZulu Natal (KZN) is still hoping to find his body and bury him. Siphamandla Mabaso from Slenga in Pietermaritzburg was swept away last week Wednesday.
DROWNING IN THE BEACH
In a much-circulated video clip, Siphamandla is seen drowning while his scared friends are watching. His older brother Siyabonga Mabaso told ZiMoja that they have been going to the beach daily since the incident hoping that his body would be recovered. "We have seen many people posting things on social media claiming that Siphamandla's body has been found. We have not found it since he drowned. This is causing us too much pain as a family and we are trying to come to terms to what really happened to him," said Mabaso.
LEARNING OF HIS DROWNING ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Mabaso further said that they were shocked to learn, through social media, that Siphamandla had drowned. "It was really painful to learn about the incident through social media. My brother was going through a lot. On the day of the incident, he had submitted his documents at the CCMA after he was fired at work last year. We have forgiven his friends as they came to share their side of the story with regards to my brother's drowning. Siphamandla was a very good swimmer. Judging by the video, he jumped at the wrong place. He was supposed to relax and keep his cool, instead he wanted to swim in that current. This is why he drowned. All we are praying and hoping for is to find his body so that we can bury him," said Mabaso. Search and Rescue teams in the city of Durban are still searching for Sphamandla's body.
