The case against Agnes Setshwantsho dubbed Rosemary 2.0 has been postponed to next month for the continuation of her bail application. Sentshwantsho (49) who was arrested on November 16 re-appeared in the Mmabatho Magistrates Court yesterday to apply for bail. She is facing a charge of murder, two counts of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

SHE INTENDS TO PLEAD NOT GUILTY

North West NPA spokesperson Henry Mamothame said that her defence attorney Nhlanhla Mahlangu read an affidavit on her behalf stating reasons why she should be granted bail. In the affidavit, Sethswantsho said she has high cholesterol and type two diabetes and that she has not been taking her medication since her arrest. She told the court that to keep her condition under control, she needed to inject insulin three times a day. "Diabetes medication requires refrigeration at a specific temperature. however, I don't think that at the police station cells where I am kept, they can store my medication. My health is a cause of concern," her affidavit stated. "In light of the above, I will ask this honourable court to permit my release on bail and to continue granting me such release until finalisation of this matter. I'm not a flight risk and I will not interfere with witnesses in the case. The allegations levelled against me are denied and I disclosed to the investigation officer the reasons for my said denial," she said in the affidavit. Mamothane said that the state is expected to call on the investigating officer to take a stand in opposing bail when the matter sits.

TIP-OFF FROM RELATIVES LED TO HER ARREST

For the past two months, Sergeant Keshi Mabunda, the cop who put serial killer Rosemary Ndlovu behind bars and a team of detectives have been working on the case following a tip-off from relatives of this suspect. "An intelligence operation led to the arrest of the accused on suspicion that she murdered her relatives to benefit from insurance claims. The suspect was traced and arrested in Centurion during a takedown operation led by the SAPS in collaboration and full cooperation with an insurance company," he said. He added that through analysis and collection of evidence including the exhumation of a body, the team was able to link its latest suspect to the team's first focus of the case. According to the police report, the murder that was initially ruled a natural death took place in Mmabatho where a female relative died under mysterious circumstances in March 2023. "Investigations have revealed that the suspect fraudulently took out insurance on behalf of her relative before her murder. Police are conducting further investigations, with the possibility of adding more charges against the accused," he said. Mamothame further said that the accused will remain in police custody pending the outcome of the bail application on 6 December.
