Court heard that cops left the scene unattended after Senzo Meyiwa was taken to hospital

Senzo Meyiwa's murder scene was compromised

Sergeant Mlungisi Patrick Mthethwa took the stand as new witness in the Senzo Meyiwa trial. Sergeant Mthethwa who is the state's 12th witness was one of the officers who attended the scene in Vosloorus at Kelly Khumalo's family home in October 2014.

NIGHT PATROL

Mthethwa, who is based at the Vosloorus Police Station, told the court that he was on night patrol with two other constables when they received a call about a shooting in the Mzamo Section. "We then rushed to Mzamo and upon arrival, we found a gentleman who introduced himself as Themba Khumalo. Khumalo didn't have the information of what had happened but he opened the house for us. We then entered the house and it looked like someone had been injured. We were told he had been rushed to the hospital," he said. Mthethwa said upon opening the kitchen door, there was a hat and crutches on the floor, close to the sink or stove. "We then went to the dining room. There was nothing much there, just two cans of liquor. There was also blood, but it was just drops. It was not a lot of blood," he said.

LEFT SCENE UNATTENDED

Mthethwa said because gentleman didn't have information on what exactly transpired they decided to go to the hospital to find out. "We then requested that he should lock the house while we rushed to the hospital. He locked and we left. As we got to the hospital, we came across this BMW X5 or X6 and it stopped. There was a lady who was driving and there was also a male person. The lady asked if we were responding to a call about what had happened in Mzamo. We said yes and she introduced herself as the mother of Senzo's child." Mthethwa said they proceeded and went inside the hospital. "I saw a man lying on a stretcher he had a bullet hole on his chest and he looked familiar like I had seen him on TV before," Mthethwa said, adding that he left the two constables he came with at the hospital to be on standby and drove back to the Khumalo home with Kelly Khumalo's mother. Mthethwa insisted that all the items he saw when he first entered the Khumalo home were still as he left them, the only thing he noticed after was a bullet projectile that was on the kitchen counter. The trial continues.
