Fans were on the edge of their seats as it was a close call for Banyana Banyana when they scored their winning goal during extra time. But they made it by beating Italy 3-2 at the Wellington Regional Stadium earlier this morning. They are over the moon and have made it through the knockout round of the 2023 FIFA World Cup.

MAKING HISTORY

This makes them the first South African national side to qualify for the round of 16 at a football World Cup. Banyana Banyana suffered a blow on Friday as they wasted a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Argentina in Dunedin. Just as when supporters were worried, they would not make it, Banyana were given a lifeline when Sweden beat Italy 5-0 in Wellington on Saturday. They played in the absence of Captain Refiloe Jane due to injury, who was replaced by Robyn Moodaly.

A CLOSE CALL

Italy was in the lead after 11 minutes when Arianna Caruso scored from the penalty spot after Chiara Beccari had been fouled by Karabo Dhlamini. Beccari saved the day for Italy when her header came back off the post, but Thembi Kgatlana gave Hildah Magaiaa a pass to finish. Sweden and South Africa will be heading to the knockouts. Banyana Banyana will now face the Netherlands in the knockout stage following a thrilling win over Italy.
