Still no justice three years after rapper City Lyts' murder

City Lyts was murdered three years ago

The tragic death of rapper Sandile Mkhize, also known as City Lyts, in Soweto three years ago continues to haunt his family and friends. Despite ongoing police investigations, the perpetrators remain at large, leaving his loved ones unable to find closure and move forward with their lives.

FAMILY DISTRAUGHT

In 2022, the 'Washa' hitmaker was gunned down in a hail of bullets. Though the investigation is still ongoing, his family struggles to come to terms with his death. His distraught cousin, Sean Vilakazi, who is still trying to come to terms with City's death, told ZiMoja: "I'm surprised by everything, and I always have to sit down and take a deep breath to talk about something that is this close to my heart."

SISTER WANTS CLOSURE

His sister Thabi said that she is also still trying to process his death and the fact that his killers have not yet been nabbed hurts. "Nothing is being done, and the people who did this also killed his best friend. Our father also died, so I'm not okay at all," she said. Musician Gigi Lamayne said that as musicians, they feel unsafe and that the justice system needs to do better. "We are not safe, and the justice system hasn't done its work, because his killers are still roaming the streets while his family is still looking for closure," she said. She added that she will always remember City for his love for music and always wanting to do better.

NO ARRESTS YET

Gigi said the family hadn't received regular updates on the progress of the case. She said: "The family hasn't been receiving regular updates on the progress of the investigation, which is not fair to them. Gauteng police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo said: "Police can confirm that a case of murder has been opened at Orlando Police Station and an investigation is underway. No arrests have been made yet. Please are still appealing to anyone who might have information that can assist with the investigation or assist in the apprehension of the suspects to please call the nearest police station."
