One dead, one injured in Cape coast high tide floods

Stationary cars were swept away by the massivwsves

One person has died following a spring high tide along the country's coastline. The National Sea Rescue Institute has confirmed that the person is a 93-year-old woman. One man was also transported hospital following the flooding that was caused by a storm. Videos of high waves during the Spring tide washing away cars across in Gordon's Bay or causing destruction to seaside restaurants have been doing the rounds on social media.

BE CAUTIOUS

People living in coastal areas were forced to evacuate their homes and be on high alert as more spring tides are expected. The NSRI's Craig Lambing said:"We are appealing to the public to monitor the forecast over the rest of this day. We're currently still in a high tide at this moment." Lambing added that they are expecting more storm surgence with the weather system that's moving up the coastline past Plettenburg Bay and up the east coast. "So our appeal to the public now is be cautious and stay away, especially during high tide because the spring high tide is going to be higher than normal."

DAMAGE CONTROL

The City of Cape Town said there are road closures in place along Baden Powell Drive, Beach Road and the R44, Beach Roadd and Gordon's Bay Road. The spokesperson for Disaster Risk Management, Charlotte Powell assessment of damages are continuing. "Our disaster management teams went out yesterday [Saturday] to do assessments around the Gordon's Bay coastal area. Preliminary feedback is that some houses were damaged as well as sand and debris in roadways. Assessments will continue this morning.

The City's Solid Waste department has been mobilised for clean-up operations, together with Traffic services, Law Enforcement and Metro Police. The impacts of the weather warnings were more felt on the Garden Route outside of the City of Cape Town boundaries," said Powell.
