South African women still trapped in Thailand after falling victim to a job scam

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) still raising funds to bring the women in Thailand back

They are still stuck in a detention centre in Myanmar, Thailand along with women from other countries, awaiting repatriation from South African authorities. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) is working to secure financial assistance for their return. The women are currently said to be facing dire conditions of overcrowding, dirty water, no beds, and no access to loved ones back home, and can no longer wait to return. This is after they fell victim to an online job scam, promising them employment in Myanmar.


LURED


A group of South African women are trapped in Myanmar, Thailand after they believed they applied for work through a legit promoter, secretary, and teaching scams. However in November last year when they arrived in Bangkok, they were said to be transported across borders. They were then allegedly forced to lure the wealthy into an online dating scam. When they refused, R50 000 was demanded.


COMING HOME


The situation is said to have worsened as they have complained about being physically sick and terrified, they might never leave. A family member of one of the women said he is worried his sister might not return and making communication with her was an effort. They have complained about overcrowding and sleeping on uncomfortable bedding, almost like in prison. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) said that 32 South Africans were victims of a human trafficking operation and had been repatriated thus far. However they were exploring other for financial assistance for the women stuck in Myanmar.
