South African tennis ace Kgothatso Montjane was crowned the US Open Women's wheelchair doubles winner on Saturday in New York. Montjane claimed the title with her partner and Japanese born Yui Kamiji through a walkover after one of the opponents they were supposed to play with in the decider fell ill.
The wheelchairs bound Montjane is now a two-time Grand Slam champion after winning the French Open women's doubles tittle alongside Kamiji in June. Tennis South Africa (TSA) took to social media to congratulated her. "Huge congratulations to our superstar. She's now a two time Grand Slam Champion! Well deserved," the tweet reads. Montjane and Kamiji were supposed to play against Dutch top seeds Diede de Groot and Jiske Griffioen on Saturday. Jiske who fell ill, withdrew from the match leaving Groot without a partner. She also retired from her singles semifinal on Friday. Montjane is the first South African woman to win a French Open title since 1981.
