Award-winning singer Suthukazi "Suthu" Arosi has cancer. Born in Cala in the Eastern Cape, the songstress, who will turn 64 on 10 March had been in and out of the hospital in the past few months.
FAMILY ASKING FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Arosi, who had toured and performed overseas in countries such as the USA, United Kingdom, Germany, Holland, France, Portugal, and Singapore, has more chemotherapy sessions to undergo and the medical bills are mounting. Former journalist and music promoter Bongani Mahlangu, who has been working closely with Arosi in the past few months, said in a media statement that all this time, she has been able to fight for her life through the grace of God and because of care from loved ones and friends. Mahlangu said the singer, who is known for her hit song Ingane Yabelungu, is asking for support from people willing to assist her to attend chemotherapy. "The Arosi family pleads for support and assistance from those in a position to help. Those who can help are kindly asked to send donations to Ms Arosi's mother," Mahlangu added.
NOT SURE OF THE TYPE OF CANCER YET
A respected actress and singer, Arosi has been in the music industry for 40 years. She has worked with legends like musical couple Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu, Jonas Gwangwa, Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela, amongst many others. She has also toured the US as part of The Lion King, where she played the part of Rafiki, amongst others. Mahlangu said they are hopeful that Arosi will be back on stage to entertain music lovers. "While doctors are still trying to figure out the type of cancer tormenting Suthu, there is hope and belief she will soon be back on her feet," said Mahlangu. An HIV/Aids activist and philanthropist, Arosi rose to fame with popular songs such as Wemnt' Omnnyama, Ulele Ulele, Vumani, Umziwasha and Amanyala. She has also performed at birthday bashes of former Presidents, Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki.
