The South African music industry is mourning after the Eastern Cape-based praise singer and poet Nomfusi Potelwa was gunned down at her home in Dutywa. Potelwa (48) ,who was also a teacher, was allegedly shot execution-style around 8pm on Tuesday night by four assailants.

Potelwa’s murder came just a day before President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the government was in the process of implementing tougher laws for those who commit a crime against women and children in the country. Information relating to her murder states that four males entered her home in Govan Mbeki township and shot her a couple of times. A source close to the family who spoke on condition of anonymity told ZiMoja that nothing was taken from the house after the shooting. "What is more shocking is that she was shot in front of her children- this was clearly a hit," the source said. It is alleged that Potelwa was shot and killed while she was having supper with her two children.
CELEBRATED ARTIST IN EC
Potelwa was a celebrated figure in the Eastern Cape, known for her captivating performances that celebrated the cultural heritage of the Xhosa people. Her lyrical prowess had earned her a devoted following both locally and nationally, with her work resonating deeply with those who appreciated the power of her words. MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the Eastern Cape, Nonceba Kontsiwe called on the law enforcement agencies to work hard on arresting Potelwa’s killers. "The murder of Nomfusi Potelwa is appalling especially as it happens on Women’s Month- it speaks of the ill-mannered society that has no respect for the lives of women and children. She was not just a creative, but also a teacher and a community builder. We have suffered a loss as a province," Kontsiwe said. MEC for the Department of Education in the province, Fundile Gade, also sent his heartfelt condolences to Potelwa’s family. She was a teacher at Dinizulu Secondary School in Dutywa.
NO SUSPECTS ARRESTED YET
Dutywa police spokesperson Captain Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed that a murder case has been opened for investigation following Potelwa’s murder. "It is alleged that four unknown males entered her house at Govan Mbeki township in Dutywa and shot the deceased in her upper body, she died on the scene. The motive for her killing is unknown at this stage, however, police investigation is ongoing." Mawisa said. She said that the suspects are unknown at this stage.
