She is nominated for a Metro FM music award for Best R&B, and she is up against Mthandazo Gatya, Nontokozo Mkhize ft Nomfundo Moh, Nanette & Blxckie ft. BGRZ and Tyla. Newcomer Filah Lah Lah, real name Reabetswe Fila Ranamane tells ZiMoja she is thrilled not to have even made it to the list of great stars.
NOMINATED FOR A METRO
She says being nominated for a Metro FM award is a dream come true. This means a lot to her, and she is glad the music is working out, as she chose it over her Law Degree. She believes her hard work got her the nomination. "Last year we worked hard. My first EP was during COVID-19, I thought the world was going to end. I was pressured to drop something," she tells ZiMoja. "It was received really well. Then I did the second EP the following year, which was really moody and sad because I was going through a break-up. But it was a sign to keep going. Now we are here two, three years later."
NEW ALBUM
She spent a year working on her upcoming album, set to be released next week Friday. "We have been pushing," she says. While making the project, she would wake up every morning for a year and just work on her music. "The process of making music is taxing emotionally and financially but I had a lot of support," she adds. "That is what I would do. When you are working on music, there's no money coming in. But luckily my partner came through and my family. I also had a few influencing gigs that would come through," she adds.
LAW
The Law graduate started making music while studying at university. "I would perform with my band from time to time for fun. We would post songs on SoundCloud.," she says. "Law doesn't give you a lot of time to do much, so I was doing it for fun until I graduated, came to Joburg, and took it seriously," She adds that she gave it a try and realised that this was something she wanted to do. "I was lying to myself in university actually, I really wanted to do music full time, but I was afraid." Filah Lah Lah has never worked at a legal firm a day in her life, and she doubts she will. "I have chosen music; the music chose me. I am happy because the results of my hard work are paying off," she says. With her ever evolving, she gets compared a lot to US stars Sza, Erykah Badu, and many others. "I don't mind, I know one day I will get to work with those artists."
