Seven people including a police officer and a suspect he was transporting died in a head-old-collision between a sedan and a police van on R101 road in Mookgopong in Limpopo yesterday. The five other victims were passengers and a driver of the sedan while another police officer is fighting for his life in hospital after the crash.

Transport and Community Safety acting spokesperson Mafenya Lediga said according to reports, a Renault sedan collided head-on with a police Toyota light bakkie, which was travelling from Mookgophong towards Mokopane. Five people from a sedan and two passengers from the SAPS van, a police officer and a suspect perished on the scene. "The driver of the SAPS vehicle was rushed to hospital and is currently receiving medical attention. The cause of this horrific accident is still unknown and is currently being investigated," Madiga.

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani said she was disturbed by the news. "MEC Radzilani has sent messages of condolences to the bereaved families and wish the driver a speedy recovery. She has also appealed to road-users to take extra precautions during their trips in order to reduce road fatalities on the Provincial roads," Lediga said.
