Senzo Meyiwa's murder trial postponed due to judge's ill health

Senzo Meyiwa trial has been postponed to July

The family of Senzo Meyiwa has expressed frustration over yet another postponement. The trial was postponed today due to presiding Judge Tshifiwa Maumela falling ill. The five men accused of murdering the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper in October 2014 appeared in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria today. Zandile Khumalo was expected to be in the witness box today.

JUDGE'S HEALTH CHALLENGES

Addressing the court, State prosecutor George Baloyi said the matter won't proceed due to Judge Maumela's health challenges. After the meeting with the counsel, Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba presided over the matter and said: "Judge Maumela is not available due to ill health and may not be available for a long time subject to what his doctors say. Due to the publicity and media interest, we have made arrangements for the trial to continue in the third term." Ledwaba said. He added that the matter will be postponed to the 17th of July. The trial will proceed for the rest of the 3rd term.

SENZO'S FAMILY ARE GATVOL

Speaking to the media after the postponement, Meyiwa's sister Nomalanga Meyiwa said they are frustrated as a family because all of the postponements are emotionally draining for them. "We need this matter to proceed and get done so we can hear the end result of this. We are getting more confused by the day because with all these people that have been on the stand, we had hoped that they would say something tangible but it seems like they are just bluffing us. We are starting to lose hope and what's worse is that we are only informed about these postponements on the day and not prior," she said. Meyiwa was gunned down in 2014 in Vosloorus at Kelly Khumalo's home, whom he was romantically linked to at the time. The accused Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli are charged with premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms without a licence and possession of ammunition. All have pleaded not guilty.
