Sanef condemns uMkhonto weSizwe for 'threatening' SABC

Jacob Zuma

South African National Editors Forum has condemned uMkhonto weSizwe for 'threatening' the SABC over the use of the words "Government of National Unity".

A THREAT TO MEDIA FREEDOM

Sanef chairperson, Sbu Ngalwa, was referring to MK Party leader Jacob Zuma's comment during his briefing on Sunday and labeled it as a threat. "I don't think the SABC should be told by anyone how to interpret certain terms. There's no outsider who has a right to tell a newsroom whether it's SABC or a newsroom that is run by a private enterprise that they should use certain words and not others, unless they are considered to be hate speech or are harmful to other people." Zuma said their lawyers will be sending a letter of demand to the SABC to "stop deliberately misleading South Africans by using terms like GNU or GPU to refer to "present sellout coalitions."

DISCREDITING THE MEDIA

He said referring to the GNU which is a term used by the ANC and its partners in this current arrangement does not put the SABC at fault. "The reality is that this seems to be a campaign that not only seeks to discredit the SABC but the media as a whole. I also don't believe that the leaders of MK do not understand that they can't tell the media what to report or what to do because that alone is a form of censorship," he said. Ngalwa said there is no difference between MK's threats to any powerful individuals saying that certain stories cannot be published. "It starts with the MK saying that the SABC can't use the GNU, next thing they'll be telling them what to report on. I maintain that this is a campaign to discredit the media." During his briefing on Sunday, Zuma said the MK launched a new electoral court case and also asked their lawyers to write a letter of demand to the SABC.
