Yesterday marked two years since the death of musician Rikhado "Riky Rick" Makhado. The Boss Zonke singer ended his own life and left an emotional message for his family where he said he prayed that they forgive him. On his two-year death anniversary, the family has announced the return of his Cotton Fest in honour of his life and to continue his legacy.
HIS LEGACY
His long-term partner Bianca Naidoo tells ZiMoja that continuing with Cotton Fest is another way of keeping his legacy alive for his children and fans. "It has been liberating, we have successfully managed to build a movement that is not only linked to a festival but our creative programme initiatives that support our community in the creative field," she says. This year's theme, #VoteCottonFest, goes beyond a festival, keeping in line with the coming election on 29 May. "Each year the festival theme changes, last year we focused on sport, this year, and in line with our theme, we focus on voting and how important the community's voice is, in shaping their future. You'll see this come through in playful ways on the 06 April."
RIKY'S DREAM
Cotton Festival is a testament to Bianca's commitment to continuing the legacy created by the late Riky Rick. Together, the couple championed collaboration across music, fashion, lifestyle, and sports culture. "It has not been easy, but we take things one day at a time," Bianca said. "He has always been about making sure the youth are heard and their voices matter." His family has also been part of campaigns raising awareness on World Suicide Prevention Week.
NEW MUSIC
In honour of the artist, musician Young Stunna has announced that he will be releasing a song he recorded with Riky before his passing. The song features Kelvim Momo, Mas Musiq, Baby S.O.V, and Zadok. "We miss you so much unc' Mo. We know you're watching over us and we love you so much. This one's for you," Young Stunna said.
