The presidency has confirmed the resignation of State Security Agency (SSA) Director-General, Ambassador Thembisile Cheryl Majola. President Cyril Ramaphosa has since accepted the resignation, which will be effective on November 30.
Majola was sworn into office on the 1st of March 2022 following Ramaphosa's promises to fill the country's security services vacancies. Majola, the former Deputy Minister of Energy and former South Africa's ambassador to Senegal, Mauritania, Cape Verde, Gambia and Guinea Bissau became the first Director-General to be appointed on a three-year contract at the agency since Arthur Fraser left in 2018. Fraser was moved from SSA to Correctional Services and he was replaced by Loyisa Jafta and Gab Msimanga, but only in an acting capacity.
Upon appointing Majola, Ramaphosa said she would play a vital role in stabilising the country's intelligence services with her extensive experience in government, international relations and security. In a brief statement about Majola's resignation, Ramaphosa expressed his appreciation for her contribution to the reform and rebuilding of the State Security Agency. "President Ramaphosa wishes Ambassador Majola well in all her future endeavours," read the statement.
