With the growing number of social media hackers and cybercrimes, not even mainstream radio stations are safe. On Sunday, SABC Radio 2000 was hacked and riddled with posts from Tesla.

HACKED STATION

The station sent out an alert to the public about the hacking of their X account. "The hack happened on Sunday, 02 June 2024 and X has been duly informed and the station is taking steps to rectify the situation," the station shared. "Any posts from 'Tesla News', which has currently taken over the account must be disregarded by the public. Radio 2000 will keep its X platform users updated on-air and on its other social media platforms on any further developments."

HACKED CELEBS

There have been several other celebrities and businesses that have lost accounts to hacking of social media platforms. Accounts belonging to celebrities such as NaakMusiq's and Letoya Makhene's account were once taken over. Actress Andrea Dondolo has also fallen victim to a social media scam and a TikTok account claimed that was requesting money through her foundation.

HOW TO AVOID GETTING YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA HACKED

Hackers and cybercriminals have been having the time of their lives on social media and anyone can be a target. Here are some tips to avoid being a target.

·      Get a strong password that is not obvious. Avoid passwords like '123456' and 'password123.'

·      Keep your password protected. There are apps like KeePass that can help keep your passwords organised for you even If it may be complicated.

·      Don't use the same password or re-use a password. Many people use the same password for all their accounts, which is very dangerous.

·      Beware of phishing emails. These come in the form of suspicious links that one can click without noticing. Check the sending email address, if it does not look suspicious.

·      Be careful with third-party apps. Do not give unknown third-party apps access to your social media, even popular apps.

·      Do not click unknown links
