Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has relaunched the Nancefield railway line from Soweto to Johannesburg after a four-year closure following the Covid-19 lockdown. This is one of 40 corridors that were vandalised across the country during the lockdown, currently 31 of them have been rehabilitated and operational.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Prasa Board Chairperson Nokwe Makama explained that they are working tirelessly to bring the remaining nine corridors back to service. "We are working on steroids. So, they have been working night and day to make sure that everything is back. What we are doing as the board is an oversight visit to ensure that what is reported to the board is being undertaken. And secondly, we are interacting with commuters about their feelings and will give feedback to Prasa,"said Makama.

A SIGH OF RELIEF

The transport minister Sindisiwe Chikunga took the R7.50 train from Nancefield to Park Station, where many commuters expressed a sigh of relief and excitement for the efficiency of train services. Sithembile September, who lives in Pimville, but works in Sunninghill said she won't be taking taxis anytime soon. "I'll take a train and get off at Park Station and then get a taxi to Sunninghill from MTN Taxi Rank. I'm always anxious when I'm in a taxi. It's either the taxi is in bad condition or the driver is reckless so with these new trains and no violence, I will travel to work in peace. Although I'll still be taking a taxi at least it will be two and not four like before,"she said. The Minister of Transport said since the recovery of the passenger rail services in the 2020/2021 financial year, over 70 million passenger trips have been made to date, from a low base of 7.4 million passenger trips made in the 2020/21 financial year.
