Police nab six suspects who belong to the N3 blue light gang

Police pounce on N3 blue light gang

The police have arrested six suspects in connection with the N3 Highway robberies. The suspects labelled the 'blue light gang' were allegedly terrorising motorists along the N3 Highway by robbing them of their belongings.

POLICE CONFIRMATION

Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni confirmed the arrests and said the gang dressed in police uniforms and paraded as officers before either kidnapping or robbing occupants. This is the same highway that transport minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga, was robbed last year. "We have put a formidable team on the N3 Highway and it is safe to say six people have been arrested for the five cases that were opened. They will be going to court soon but the concern is that some of the suspects might be repeat offenders. We are also working very closely with Tracker in bringing these suspects to book because most of our motorists are their customers, "said Mthombeni.

N3 TERROR

Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said last Saturday night, a medical doctor was hijacked and robbed of his belongings while driving on the N3 highway near Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni. "He had been driving on the N3 from Newcastle to Johannesburg when he was stopped by a white double cab with blue lights, three of the five men were wearing police uniform. The suspects took the doctor into a maize field where they robbed him of his luxury vehicle as well as jewellery, medical equipment and an undisclosed amount of cash. Two men held him captive while others went to an ATM to withdraw money from his account," said Masondo. He said the doctor was left in the maize field and managed to seek assistance from passing motorists.
