The police have confirmed the arrest of celebrity sangoma Makgotso Lee-Ann Mokopo, popularly known as Gogo Maweni, on charges of assault that date back to 2019.

THE ARREST

Gogo Maweni was detained at the Mondeor police station on Sunday. In a statement seen by ZiMoja, SAPS reported that members from the Gauteng cold case investigation and counter intelligence investigation units embarked on an intelligence drive operation to trace and arrest the suspect mentioned above wanted on an assault charge. "The information on the whereabouts of the suspect was followed up and led us to the suspect's residence in Fairlands and later to the Mondeor area, where the suspect was traced and arrested,' the statement by an investigating officer stated. "The suspect was detained at Mondeor SAPS and will be appearing in the Protea Magistrates' Court on 2025-01-20, where bail will be opposed. The suspect is also linked to the following cases, which are still under investigation by this office: Eldorado Park, Mondeor, Moroka, two cases in Orange Farm, and one in Bekkersdal.'

EXPOSED

The arrest comes after Gogo Maweni's former friend turned nemesis Gogo Skhotheni revealed the alleged crimes. Gogo Maweni's former friend, Precious, also accused the sangoma of hiring gunmen to kill her husband, Jabu Mahlangu. Gogo Maweni's publicist, Simphiwe Majola, has declined to comment on the matter. "Let me wrap my head around all you are saying,' he said. Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a well-known traditional healer was arrested in Johannesburg on Sunday. "The 39-year-old suspect has been charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm that allegedly took place back in 2019. She is expected to appear before the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday, 20 January 2025," Masondo said.
