Northern Cape Acting Police Commissioner, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, has commended four police officers' for their 'swift and decisive' action by saving a two-month-old infant from a burning shack on Saturday. It is alleged that the baby's father forcefully took the baby from her mother and locked him and the baby inside his shack, threatening to burn it down.

HEROES

The police were called and while on the scene, Sergeants Mthetheleli Mthambeki, Khanyisa Khalashe, Constables Andile Jara and Andre Coetzee tried to negotiate with the suspect to release the baby until they noticed smoke coming from the shack. Spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the police forcefully gained entrance to the shack while the suspect charged at them with a sharp object. "Fortunately, the members were able to ward off the attack. The police safely removed the child and apprehended the father," Sam said.

FATHER CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER

Sam also said the father was charged with attempted murder. "The police are investigating the motive behind this incident and will remain relentless in ensuring that justice is served for victims of Gender-Based-Violence and femicide," Sam added. The father appeared at the Hanover Magistrates Court yesterday and his case was postponed to 8 April for legal representation. He was remanded in custody.
