North West police are searching for a man who calls himself Dr. Kalvin Sofika (30) and who swindled close to R3 million from the pension payout of a former police captain (53). The suspect, a Ugandan national, who pretended to be a medical doctor was in a romantic relationship with the former cop.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the 53-year-old victim met the suspect at a certain shopping complex in Rustenburg around September last year. "He introduced himself as Dr Kalvin Sofika and they exchanged contact details. The woman and the suspect started dating," said Mokgwabone. He said that while dating, Sofika asked the woman to take loans for him, which she did, and he further convinced her to leave her job as a captain in the police service.

RESIGNED FOR MJOLO

Mokgwabone said the police captain resigned from her job in November 2023 after she was told that she does not have to work or depend on a salary to survive. "The alleged boyfriend also took her to a traditional healer, who confirmed to her that she needs to resign so that she can start making money. Due to that, the victim lost her pension money and the loans she took for the suspect, all amounting to R2.9 million," said Mokgwabone, who added that the matter is still under investigation and no arrest has been made. "It is apparent that the suspect relocated after the incident," he added. In a separate matter, a former school principal in her 50s was swindled of R2.8 million in pension payouts using the same modus operandi. The Ben 10, who is originally from Tanzania, dated the teacher from Pretoria for a year before convincing her to resign to start a business and disappeared with her money. The Gauteng police are also looking for the man called Henry Mugisha in the matter.
