Orlando Pirates have launched an investigation into their players conduct after a recent video clip emerged where the soccer stars were discussing the amount they will be using in betting for other soccer matches.
PLAYERS DISCUSSING SPORTS BETTING
The Buccaneers number one goalkeeper ,Sipho Chiane, is one of the people being investigated by the Soweto club. In the 30 second video clip that has gone viral on social media, Sipho could be heard telling fellow players, in what looked like a dressing room, that he will place a R600 bet. "12 May, half past 5, Old Trafford. Straight win, R600. My guy! Ke dlala di team tse pedi neh. Ticket yaaka ke emela ka-12 (I'm playing two teams and I'll wait for my ticket at 12)," he said. This morning, the Buccaneers confirmed that they were aware of the video that is doing rounds about their players discussing their bets.
INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED
In a statement, the club said they have noted the video involving their players discussing betting. "We would like to clarify that the players in the video did not place any bets. The video captured a light-hearted moment among teammates purporting to have placed a bet on an English Premiership match. As a club, we are fully aware of the regulations regarding betting. Betting on any sport is strictly prohibited for any professional player. However, we have addressed the matter with the players involved, emphasising that even in jest, such discussions can have serious implications," the statement read. The Bucs have reiterated the importance of adhering to betting regulations to avoid any potential long-term consequences, adding that the players recognise their error in judgement and have since apologised. "However, due to the seriousness of this matter, the club has instituted its own internal investigation to ensure that no player is involved in any form of sports betting as this would constitute a breach in the club handbook that all players are signatory to," the team said.
BETTING REGULATIONS
According to FIFA Code of Ethics, all soccer officials, referees, players and match agents are forbidden from participating in, either directly or indirectly, betting, gambling, lotteries or similar events or transactions related to football matches or competitions and any related football activities. Sipho recently took the number 24 jersey a season ago after poor performances by goalkeepers Siyabonga Mpontshane and the injured Richard Ofori.
