The state has withdrawn the assault case against former Bidvest Wits, Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns player Phakamani Mahlambi. Phakamani was arrested last month after his girlfriend opened a case against him alleging that he assaulted her at their home over a microwave.
MEDIATION
Phakamani (26) appeared briefly at the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court today. After a short court sitting, both parties agreed on mediation, assisted by the court, to resolve the matter. A close friend revealed that Phakamani and his girlfriend have reunited and are dating again after a short break-up following the assault. In court they were seen sitting side by side before the appearance in front of the magistrate, looking cosy. Phakamani was arrested by the Sebenza Police in Edenvale, East Rand, on 23 April. He was granted R500 bail.
NOT PLAYING
During his arrest, Mamelodi Sundowns distanced themselves from the soccer player. In a short statement, the club which Phakamani left in July 2022 said, "There is no Mamelodi Sundowns player currently playing for the team in the senior or development team that has been arrested." Phakamani posted on his social media that he quit soccer long ago. "Ey guys, tell your journalists to leave me alone. Yaz angisadlali ngisho ibhola aybo f&*ck please ngyacele neh. (I stopped even playing football, please)."
He refused to comment when asked by ZiMoja on the matter. "Mind your business," he said.
Meanwhile, former Orlando Pirates footballer Thandani 'Bibo' Ntshumayelo appeared at the Randburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He is accused of assaulting his girlfriend Itumeleng Alice in February this year. His case was postponed to 12 June.
