ConCourt rules Oscar Pistorius was eligible for parole consideration in March

Oscar Pistorious has been due for parole consideration since March

The Constitutional Court has ruled that convicted Paralympian Oscar Pistorius was eligible for parole consideration six months ago. This comes after Pistorius recently turned to the apex court in a final bid on the correct interpretation of his parole eligibility.

PAROLE DUE

Pistorius who has served almost seven years of his sentence approached the ConCourt and made an application seeking clarification on when he was eligible for parole. He was denied parole in March this year after the Parole Board ruled that he should remain behind bars after it found that he had not served the minimum required time behind bars to qualify to be released. After this failed bid, Pistorius took his application to the ConCourt in August which has revealed that the Paralympian was due for parole consideration in March, when the Supreme Court of Appeal denied it to him.

CORRECTIONAL SERVICES LOOKING INTO THE MATTER

Pistorius was sentenced to six years imprisonment on charges of culpable homicide for shooting to death his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day in 2013. His sentence was extended to 13 years and five months after the National Prosecuting Authority appealed his sentence at the Supreme Court of Appeal. The Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said, "Briefly, the matter relates to the sentence given to inmate Oscar Leonard Pistorius, its effective date and the impact on the calculation of the minimum detention period. DCS is studying the order and shall in due course pronounce itself on the way forward. This shall ensure that the order of court is correctly executed." The sentence imposed by the Supreme Court of Appeal took into consideration that Pistorius had already served a period of imprisonment and correctional supervision, which was a year and a couple of months, after he was sentenced.
