A 94-year-old granny has been tragically murdered allegedly by her 24-year-old neighbour in Umzimkhulu in the far north of KwaZulu Natal. It's alleged that the victim, gogo Nokubonga Mjoli stayed alone and would usually call the young man to help her with minor things at her home and send him to the shop.

RAPED AND KILLED

On Friday, Mjoli as per usual called the neighbour she trusted to help her in her house and that was the last time she was seen alive. Instead of helping the gogo as always, the suspect robbed, raped and strangled the gogo and left her dead in her house. According to another neighbour who did not want to be named, the community only became aware of the incident on Saturday afternoon when they noticed that she had not been sitting in front of her house as she normally did.

GRUESOME DISCOVERY 

The neighbours decided to go check on her and made a shocking discovery. Gogo Mjoli was found dead on her bed. "We questioned the young man about what happened that night, as he was the last person to be seen at gogo Mjoli's house. The young man confessed to the crime, saying that he had raped and strangled her,' the neighbour said. The community called the police, and the suspect was arrested. KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident. "Umzimkhulu police have arrested a 24-year-old man for rape, robbery and murder following an incident in which a 94-year-old woman was allegedly attacked by the suspect. It is alleged that the victim was at her place of residence when the suspect forced entry, robbed, rape, killed the victim," he said. The suspect is expected to appear in Umzimkhulu Magistrates Court this morning.
