A budding musician, Csana, from the Eastern Cape was attacked while performing at a June 16 event in her home province. It’s alleged that fans thought she was mimicking the much-loved singer Zahara. Csana who was born Nonguquko Mlaza says she is still traumatised by the incident.

THE ATTACK

She said that she doesn’t really know how it all started. "All I saw was a can flying towards me and a few drunk people hurling insults at me saying I am not Zahara as if that is how I introduced myself," she adds. Although Csana refused to comment much on the incident, the Port St John-born artist is considering getting security when she performs. "I now get why some people walk around with bodyguards. I honestly don’t want to dwell on that too much because I will be giving hooligans and bullies power and glory, but my message to them is that if you don’t like something walk away from it," she said. Csana, who will be jetting off to Hong Kong next week says there is nothing she can do to change her voice. "It’s unfortunate that God gave me this talent and I am embracing it to the fullest. This is my voice... I speak and sing with the same voice. I am not trying to be Zahara," she adds.

FINDING IT DIFFICULT TO BREAK THROUGH TO THE MAINSTREAM

She says she finds it hard to break through in the mainstream music industry because she is often compared to Zahara. She started pretty much the same time as Zahara but her big break is taking forever to come. She says she is tired of being constantly told that she is copying Zahara’s style when in actual fact she is not. "I love and respect Zahara. I don’t even think I sound like her. the fact that I also play guitar doesn’t not mean I am mimicking her style," she says. It seems like the guitar player and songwriter has been followed by strings of misfortunes. Early this year, Daily Sun reported that after forgetting her prized guitar in an e-hailing service, the driver was apparently refusing to return it back to her after he had promised to drop it off back. She was quoted saying that the musical instrument puts food on her table and was delaying the progress of her upcoming album.
